Parents who wish to encourage their daughters to reach for the stars should use Dr. Jennifer Walden of Austin, Texas, as an example. Not only does this beautiful medical professional’s resume play out like a well planned dream, her personal life appears quite the fairy tale as well.

An Austin native, Dr. Jennifer Walden earned her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Texas in Austin, where she was one of five children born to two professional parents. Although Jennifer was later admitted to medical school on a waiting list, she ultimately achieved Salutatorian of her graduating class. Enthralled by the dual nature that plastic surgery shares with the artistry and creativity aesthetic, she chose a path wherein she could produce not only medically necessary procedures, but also enhanced outcomes. After completing the plastic surgery program at UT Galveston, she found herself transported halfway across the country to accept a fellowship at Manhattan’s Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital in New York City where she was one of only two inducted fellows.

Eight successful years in practice would pass before Dr. Walden underwent a major life change: she decided that motherhood was a yearning she had not yet fulfilled. With no serious relationship in her life, she opted for an in-vitro fertilization that result in the birth of her twin sons, Houston and Rex. Although she loved Manhattan and her very successful medical practice along with mentor and internationally acclaimed plastic surgeon, Dr. Sherrill Aston, Dr. Walden returned to Austin, Texas, so that she could rear Houston and Rex closer to family.

In the May/June, 2014 issue of Austin, MD, Dr. Walden’s advice to young women who aspire to become physicians is encapsulated in this mantra: “It’s a marathon, not a sprint. You need the personality and internal drive to sustain your education, career, and well-being of your family and yourself over the long haul, not just over months or a few years.”

It is quite obvious that this successful doctor and mother of two young sons has done just that.
